ROMEO, Mich. — Award-winning Romeo RIM (www.romeorim.com), the world’s innovative leader in custom reaction injection molding and composite solutions, is urging the United States Congress to reject $2.4 billion in transportation budget cuts proposed by the Trump administration.
The cuts to Fiscal Year 2017 and FY 2018 budgets would halt construction of new and expanded public transit projects around the country, negatively impacting jobs and squashing gains in numerous industries related to some 50 public transit projects in 23 states.
“Such massive cuts to public transportation funding could derail the U.S. manufacturing train just as it is finally leaving the station,” Romeo RIM CEO Randy Johnson said, adding, “The ripple effect of such cuts have the ability to stymie economic development across many market sectors and erase recent gains.”
Romeo RIM produces numerous important parts such as bumpers, fenders, hoods, fascia modules, air deflectors, rear side panels, fairings, roofs, doors and assorted enclosures for buses, rail cars, and other public transit vehicles. Due in part to increasing demand for affordable, high-quality long fiber injection (LFI) molded parts for transportation customers, the company grew to 150 employees in 2016 with key hires in the areas of application and tooling engineering, customer support, business development, program management and technical sales. Romeo RIM has also invested heavily in its state-of-the-art, 173,000-square ft. innovation campus on 67.5 acres north of Detroit, with new innovative manufacturing technology and other additions to its physical plant.
Romeo RIM is also very active in the heavy truck market, producing very large, complex parts with dimensional stability and impact resistance for 18-wheelers and other cargo transportation vehicles. Transportation advocacy organizations point to the effect public transit funding cuts will have on the trucking industry, as public transportation makes interstate commerce work better by helping to reduce congestion on the nation’s roadways.
Romeo RIM’s sought-after LFI technology uses a mix of polyurethane and chopped fiberglass in molds to create products with the unique combination of superior strength and light weight. Romeo RIM was the first company to bring LFI to North America, providing customers with advantages including lower tooling and production costs, dimensional stability, and optimized weight and strength.
The company’s innovative manufacturing technology includes seven highly automated molding machines for parts up to 10 ‘x 4.5’ x 1’, robot-controlled painting and molding equipment, and a 400-ton, 12′ x 12′ double shuttle press, which is the largest in North America.
